Husky care on the 19th Floor: Taking Care of Primrose, the Husky

husky care on the 19th Floor: Taking Care of Primrose, the Husky

There’s something special about taking care of a dog that isn’t yours. Growing a new bond and over time creating new memories. That’s how I feel about Primrose, the fluffy, independent, and sometimes hilariously zooming husky who lives way up on the 19th floor of my apartment building. I’ve been watching her for months now, and let me tell you. Caring for her isn’t your average dog-sitting experience.

Getting to Know Primrose

If you’ve ever met a husky, you know they tend to come with big personalities. Primrose, however, is a bit different from other huskies. She takes her time warming up and being a little anxious. At first, she came up to me, looking at me with big eyes. No dramatic husky howls or talking. No instant zoomies. Just quiet and a bit of a sniff of me before getting to work and taking care of her and her bowls of food and water.

But after a while of going up to her apartment door, Once she decided I was a consistent and familiar face, That’s when the real Primrose started coming out gradually.

She’s playful in her own time, once she gets comfortable, she turns into a talkative, ball of energy. She’s also very cuddly and loves getting a good belly rub. Even while taking her for walks outside, It’s like she has a list of things she needs to sniff along the way back. And yes, she absolutely insists on stopping at every single scent that catches her nose.

The Sacred Walks

Primrose lives for her walks. If she had her way, we’d be outside all day. Sniffing every patch of grass, pole, and spot on the pavement. Since she doesn’t have a yard to explore and keep her interest in, these walks are everything to her, exercise, mental stimulation, and a chance to embrace her inner exploring spirit.

Some days, she likes to go on a good sprint on one these walks, and let me tell you. Keeping up with a husky on a leash in the middle of a walk is a skill. Other times, she prefers a slow, leisurely walk, stopping at every intriguing scent and wanting me to follow her. I’ve learned to just go with the flow on these walks with primrose, after all, these walks are for her.

Treats, Medicine, and Apartment Manners

Primrose isn’t just a big fan of the outdoors, she’s also really loves her treats. She also likes to keep a pile of them on the couch and the floor sometimes.

One of the things I really appreciate about her is how well she takes her medicine. Some dogs turn into little magicians when it’s time to take meds, spitting pills out no matter how well you try to hide them in peanut butter. But Primrose, She just takes them like their another form of treat to her. Like a champ.

Inside the apartment, she’s really chill and relaxed. She doesn’t bounce off the walls or destroy furniture (a huge plus when living in a smaller space.) But she does have moments of playfulness, zoomies or moments where she’s trying to tell me about what a great day she had, when I open the door to come in she sometimes rushes and zooms over the couch and then back, or she tries to box me with her paws.

Lessons from a High-Rise Husky

Taking care of Primrose has taught me a few things about the apartment dog life:

Patience is key: Some dogs need time to open up, but once they do, their true personalities shine like the brightest star.

Daily exercise is non-negotiable: An exercised dog is a happy dog.

Go at their pace: Sometimes, it’s a sprint. Other times, it’s a leisurely sniff-fest. Both are okay.

Treats make everything better: Even when giving medicine.

Final Thoughts

Living in the same apartment building with a dog like Primrose isn’t always easy, but it’s just as rewarding. She may not have a backyard, but with enough love, patience, and plenty of walks, she thrives. Watching her transform from a quiet pup into a playful, talkative one has been one of the best parts of this whole experience working with prim.

And honestly? I wouldn’t trade our little adventures for anything.
